  4.     When I first saw the book “Internet Starter Kit” by Adam C. Engst, the first
  5. thought that came to mind was, “Oh no, not another Internet phone book.”  Those
  6. seasoned net-surfers out there who are reading this will understand. There are
  7. so many self-professed “complete all-you-would-ever-want-to-know-about-it”
  8. guides to the Internet, that it can make your brain suffer a divide overflow.
  9. Reading most of them is sort of akin to curling up by the fire with your
  10. favorite nineteen twenties era physics text book, and drinking your favorite
  11. nineteen twenties era beer.  Boring, and it leaves a reeeal bad taste in your
  12. mouth.
  13.     “Internet Starter Kit” breaks this mold.  Granted, it’s big.  Really big.  So
  14. big, that if it were dropped on the standard mold for Internet guides, it’d
  15. flatten them with no problem at all.  “Internet Starter Kit” is this way for a
  16. reason, though.
  17.     The information that it has in it is in depth and well ordered.  Let’s say that
  18. you wanted to know exactly how the Star-Trek  transporter work.  You could use a
  19. program called Inter-News, the book tells you how to get it (page 299), and
  20. check with the “rec.arts.startrek.tech” news group (described on page 458).
  21.     What if you wanted to send a letter to that friend of yours in Denmark?  The
  22. book comes with a program called Eudora, the net mailer’s dream, that lets you
  23. blab away at your friend with ease.  It even tells you step by step procedures
  24. for setting up Eudora (page 242), and how to address your letter (Chapter 5).
  25.     “Internet Starter Kit” also comes with a floppy disk cram packed, well
  26. compacter-pro’ed, with nearly all the software you need to start surfing with
  27. the best of ‘em.  Among the programs included are; MacTCP, the heart and soul of
  28. all Macintosh Internet connections; Eudora, a cool mail program; InterSLIP, the
  29. thing that makes all the bits and pieces of your connection to the net slide
  30. together; Fetch, to download software (It has a really cool animated cursor
  31. too); and TurboGopher, a program to get information on nearly any subject you
  32. can double click on.
  33.     In summary, I’d say that if anybody reading this would like to get a connection
  34. to the Internet, or would just like to know about it, “Internet Starter Kit” is
  35. the best source I’ve seen so far.  On Dan’s scale of Four Stars, to Four Black
  36. Holes, This one shines with the power of three and a half very well formed suns.
  37.  It’s worth getting, if not to use, then at least to hold down that bookshelf in
  38. the event of another hurricane.  Well, time for me to go check out the news
  39. group “alt.beer.”  When AMUG starts providing members with an Internet
  40. connection, This book will be required reading. Cover to Cover!  Well....
